ADI AD8250 10MHz Instrumentation Amplifier With Digitally Programmable Gains
ultime notizie sull'azienda ADI AD8250 10MHz Instrumentation Amplifier With Digitally Programmable Gains

Shenzhen Mingjiada Electronics Co., Ltd. supplies the ADI AD8250 10 MHz instrumentation amplifier, featuring digitally programmable gain.

I. AD8250 Product Description
The AD8250 is an iCMOS-process programmable-gain instrumentation amplifier with a bandwidth of up to 10 MHz. It supports gain setting via either digital logic or hardware pins, with selectable gains of 1, 2, 5 and 10, making it ideal for multiplexed acquisition front-ends, sensor signal conditioning and high-speed ADC driver applications. The device is housed in a compact 10-pin MSOP package and supports a wide supply voltage range of ±5 V to ±15 V. With a quiescent current of approximately 4 mA, it balances precision DC specifications with high-speed AC performance.

In terms of DC performance, at a gain of 10, the minimum common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) is 98 dB, with a maximum gain drift of 10 ppm per degree Celsius and an offset drift of up to 1.7 microvolts per degree Celsius. This effectively suppresses measurement errors caused by temperature drift, whilst the differential input impedance reaches the gigohm range, making it suitable for connecting high-impedance sensor signals. AC specifications include a minimum slew rate of 20 V per microsecond, a settling time of up to 615 nanoseconds with 0.001 per cent accuracy, total harmonic distortion as low as –110 dB at 1 kHz, whilst maintaining a minimum common-mode rejection ratio of 80 dB at 50 kHz; at a gain of 10, the input voltage noise is 18 nV per √Hz, ensuring excellent signal fidelity.

Gain control features two operating modes: in transparent mode, changes in the voltage levels at the A0 and A1 pins allow instantaneous gain switching; in latch mode, gain configuration signals are transmitted in parallel via the bus through the WR write port, enabling the master control chip to dynamically switch the amplification factor and adapt to software-controlled automatic range data acquisition systems. An integrated array of precision matching resistors eliminates the need for external matching resistors, simplifies the analogue front-end layout, reduces the number of peripheral components, and minimises interference with the signal caused by PCB parasitic parameters. It is widely used in industrial data acquisition, test and measurement equipment, pressure and strain sensor modules, portable instruments and other applications.

II. Key Features of the AD8250
1. Gain and Control Modes: Gain steps G=1, 2, 5, 10; Dual-mode configuration, programmable via parallel digital pins or with fixed gain set directly via hardware pins, suitable for MCU-controlled automatic range switching or fixed-range measurement scenarios. Independent compensation for each gain setting; the gain-bandwidth product is optimised for each range, reaching 10 MHz at G=1 and 3 MHz at G=10.
2. High-speed AC performance: Slew rate 20 V/μs; 0.001% accuracy settling time typically 615 ns; total harmonic distortion (THD) as low as –110 dB at 1 kHz; input voltage noise 18 nV/√Hz (G=10), suitable for driving high-speed, high-precision ADCs.
3. Precision DC specifications: Minimum common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) of 98 dB at G = 10; maximum offset drift of 1.7 μV/°C; maximum gain drift of 10 ppm/°C; input impedance in the GΩ range; high input impedance reduces the loading effect on high-impedance sensors.
4. Power Supply and Packaging: Bipolar power supply ±5 V to ±15 V; operating temperature range –40 °C to +85 °C; housed in a 10-pin MSOP package, which is compact and suitable for high-density data acquisition boards.
5. Architectural Advantages: A voltage-feedback instrumentation amplifier; the iCMOS process is compatible with high-voltage signals, combining the low power consumption of CMOS inputs with the high speed and low distortion of bipolar technology.

III. Operating Principle of the AD8250
The AD8250 employs a classic three-op-amp instrumentation amplifier architecture, with all gain resistors integrated on-chip; laser trimming ensures high resistance matching accuracy. The gain selection pin controls an internal analogue switch, which switches between different combinations of resistors connected to the feedback loop, enabling four-step fixed gain switching. Unlike solutions using external resistors, the on-chip resistors are manufactured under the same temperature and process conditions, resulting in significantly better gain temperature drift and common-mode rejection stability than discrete solutions. The parallel control interface features simple logic; the host controller requires only two I/O pins to perform dynamic gain switching, facilitating the implementation of automatic range selection via software.

IV. Typical Applications of the AD8250
The AD8250 is suitable for signal acquisition front-ends in automated equipment, industrial multi-channel DAQ boards, laboratory test and measurement instruments, biomedical signal acquisition, and strain and pressure sensor conditioning. In measurement systems requiring software-controlled range switching, the AD8250 can replace multiple fixed-gain instrumentation amplifiers, thereby reducing the number of components, PCB area and calibration workload.

V. AD8250 Selection and Buyer’s Guide
When selecting a model, prioritise confirming the system’s bandwidth requirements. The AD8250’s full bandwidth of 10 MHz corresponds to a gain of 1; bandwidth decreases proportionally as gain increases. At a gain of 10, the bandwidth is approximately 3 MHz; therefore, a bandwidth margin should be allowed for high-frequency acquisition scenarios. The gain settings are fixed at 1, 2, 5 and 10. If continuously adjustable gain or settings such as 1, 2, 4, 8 and 1000 are required, the AD8251 and AD8253 from the same series should be considered.

Power supply configurations must distinguish between single-supply and dual-supply applications. This device is natively compatible with bipolar positive and negative power supplies; when used with a single supply, a suitable common-mode bias circuit must be added to prevent signal clipping distortion. The standard version’s temperature range covers –40 °C to +85 °C; it can be selected directly for industrial ambient temperature projects, whilst for high-temperature special environments, the limit parameters in the original manufacturer’s datasheet must be verified in advance.

Prior to procurement, verify the package type suffix to ensure it is an MSOP package. Simultaneously confirm the batch, reel specifications and whether the AD8250-EVALZ evaluation board is required for preliminary validation. During the sampling phase, prioritise requesting small batches of material to test gain-switching timing, noise and temperature drift performance. For mass production, plan delivery times in advance to avoid project delays caused by fluctuations in the manufacturer’s lead times.

During use, care must be taken to separate the digital and analogue grounds in the circuit layout to minimise crosstalk from digital control lines to analogue input signals. A brief output disturbance may occur during gain switching; therefore, an appropriate delay must be introduced in the downstream ADC sampling to avoid the settling period and ensure sampling accuracy.
