ultime notizie sull'azienda Bosch BMI270 Six-Axis IMU Sensor | Attitude Sensing Chip for Drone Flight Controllers | Supplied and Recycled at Premium Prices by Mingjiada

With the rapid growth of the low-altitude economy and the intelligent unmanned systems industry, the drone market continues to expand. As a core component of flight control systems, inertial sensors account for approximately 31.75 per cent of the drone sensor market. The Bosch Sensortec BMI270 six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), with its ultra-low power consumption, high-precision attitude sensing and compact packaging, has become the preferred solution for flight control designs in both consumer and industrial drones. As a globally leading authorised independent distributor of electronic components, Shenzhen Mingjiada Electronics Co., Ltd. has long provided genuine BMI270 components from stock, alongside professional inventory recovery services, offering one-stop component solutions to clients across the drone industry chain.

I. Overview of the BMI270 Chip: Small Package, Great Capabilities

The BMI270 is an ultra-low-power smart inertial measurement unit (IMU) launched by Bosch. Within an LGA-14 package measuring just 2.5 mm × 3.0 mm × 0.8 mm, it integrates a 16-bit digital triaxial accelerometer and a 16-bit digital triaxial gyroscope, capable of simultaneously detecting attitude and rotational components across six degrees of freedom. The chip is pin-compatible with the BMI160, BMI260, BMI261 and BMI263, facilitating product upgrades and solution iterations for customers.

BMI270 Key Specifications:

Sensor type: 6-axis IMU (accelerometer + gyroscope)

Accelerometer range: ±2g / ±4g / ±8g / ±16g (programmable)

Gyroscope range: ±125°/s to ±2000°/s (programmable)

Resolution: 16-bit ADC

Communication interfaces: I²C / SPI

Operating voltage: 1.71 V to 3.6 V

Full-speed operating current: 685 µA (typical)

Low-power mode: 10 µA only

Standby current: 3.5 µA

FIFO buffer: 2 KB

Operating temperature: –40 °C to +85 °C

Package dimensions: 2.5 × 3.0 × 0.8 mm³

The BMI270 features an integrated power management unit and a 2KB FIFO buffer, supporting hardware synchronisation, timestamping and rapid error compensation. With an accelerometer noise level as low as 160 µg/√Hz and a gyroscope noise level of just 0.007 dps/√Hz, it delivers outstanding sensing performance in a compact package.

II. The Key Role of the BMI270 in UAV Flight Control

The core of a UAV flight control system lies in attitude estimation and flight stabilisation control, and the BMI270 is the ideal sensor for realising these functions.

(1) Attitude Estimation

The accelerometer is used to measure the direction of gravity relative to the UAV, calculating the pitch and roll angles; the gyroscope measures changes in angular velocity to track attitude changes in real time. Through data fusion of the accelerometer and gyroscope (Kalman filtering or complementary filtering), high-precision attitude information can be obtained. Experimental data show that a flight control solution based on the BMI270 can achieve reliable directional measurement accuracy with average angular errors of only ±0.24° (Roll), ±0.74° (Pitch) and ±0.41° (Yaw).

(2) Flight Stabilisation Control

The high-precision angular velocity and acceleration data provided by the BMI270 help the flight controller to rapidly detect tilting or rotation and adjust motor speeds to restore balance. When encountering strong wind disturbances, the gyroscope can quickly detect rotation and correct it via control algorithms.

(3) Navigation Assistance

The accelerometer can be used to estimate changes in the drone’s speed and position (inertial navigation), serving as an auxiliary navigation means when GPS signals are weak or lost, thereby ensuring flight safety.

Currently, the BMI270 has been integrated into several open-source flight control projects, including the M5Stack StampFly open-source quadcopter kit (which integrates the BMI270 six-axis gyroscope and the BMM150 magnetic compass), MadFly flight control firmware, and custom flight control board solutions based on the STM32F405. The maturity of these open-source ecosystems further validates the reliability and ease of use of the BMI270 in the drone sector.

III. Five Core Technical Advantages of the BMI270

1. Ultra-low power consumption design

The BMI270 is optimised for extended flight scenarios, with typical power consumption of just 685 µA at full speed and only 10 µA in low-power mode. This effectively extends the flight time of drones, making it particularly suitable for power-sensitive portable drone designs.

2. High Accuracy and Interference Resistance

Built-in temperature compensation and digital calibration algorithms ensure stable data output across a wide temperature range of –40 °C to +85 °C. Bosch’s patented Component Re-trajection (CRT) technology compensates for soldering drift, reducing post-soldering sensitivity error to as low as ±0.4 per cent.

3. Integrated Machine Learning Core (MLC)

The BMI270 features a built-in programmable machine learning core, allowing pre-trained AI models to run directly on the sensor. This enables localised motion pattern recognition without the need for the main processor, thereby reducing system latency and optimising power consumption.

4. Enhanced Sensor Fusion

Supports nine-axis attitude estimation in conjunction with an external processor (fusing accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer data), outputting high-precision attitude angles (Roll/Pitch/Yaw), suitable for precise drone navigation.

5. Large-Capacity FIFO Buffer

Features a built-in 2KB FIFO buffer with support for hardware synchronisation and timestamping, effectively reducing the risk of data overflow and enhancing the data reliability of flight control systems.
