Mingjiada Supply TI DRV8428 35V 1A Bipolar Stepper Motor Driver, Which Supports High-Precision Microstepping At 1/256 Resolution

Introduction: In office automation, factory automation, security pan-tilt units and upgrades to portable medical devices, stepper systems are facing increasingly stringent requirements for ‘compact size, low noise and minimal peripheral components’. Mingjiada Electronics now supplies the Texas Instruments (TI) DRV8428 series of bipolar stepper motor drivers, offering a 35V rating, 1A full-scale output, and up to 1/256 microstepping. These drivers integrate current sensing and Smart Tune technology, helping R&D teams simplify motor driver design and reduce PCB footprint.

Product Overview: DRV8428 Bipolar Stepper Motor Driver
The DRV8428 is a stepper motor driver launched by TI for industrial and consumer applications. The device is fully integrated, comprising two N-channel power MOSFET H-bridge drivers, a microstepping divider and integrated current sensing functionality. The DRV8428 can drive a full-scale output current of up to 1 A (depending on the PCB design).
The DRV8428 utilises an internal current sensing architecture, eliminating the need for two external power sensing resistors, thereby reducing PCB footprint and lowering system costs. With a simple STEP/DIR interface, the direction and step rate of the stepper motor can be managed via an external controller.
The DRV8428 can be configured for various stepping modes, ranging from full step to 1/256 microstep. With its dedicated nSLEEP pin, the device offers a low-power sleep mode, enabling ultra-low quiescent standby current. Protection features include supply under-voltage, overcurrent, short-circuit and over-temperature protection. Fault conditions are indicated via the EN/nFAULT pin.

DRV8428 Key Parameters at a Glance
The DRV8428 is a fully integrated driver IC from TI designed for industrial and consumer stepper applications, incorporating two N-channel power MOSFET H-bridges, a microstepping divider and current sensing circuitry.
Motor type: Bipolar stepper (can also be used in related dual-channel/single-channel brushed applications, depending on the specific package/standard version)
Absolute maximum VM: 35 V; Operating VM: 4.2 V–33 V
Output current: Full scale 1 A, peak 1.7 A, 0.7 A RMS (subject to PCB heat dissipation, voltage and temperature)
Microstepping: Full step to 1/256 microstep, STEP/DIR interface (standard DRV8428); The DRV8428P series offers PH/EN or PWM control
Current sensing: Internal current mirror architecture, eliminating the need for external power-sampling resistors; full-scale accuracy ±6%
Damping/Chopping: Smart Tune + hybrid damping; shutdown time configurable to 7 μs/16 μs/32 μs
On-resistance: Typical 1500 mΩ (HS+LS) at 24 V and 25 °C
Logic compatibility: 1.8V/3.3V/5.0V inputs
Low power consumption: nSLEEP sleep mode quiescent current approximately 2 μA
EMI optimisation: Spread-spectrum clock reduces emissions
Protection: VM under-voltage lockout (UVLO), overcurrent protection (OCP), thermal shutdown (OTSD), fault indication via EN/nFAULT

DRV8428 Key Product Features
1. High-precision microstepping up to 1/256: Step subdivision is configured via hardware pins, allowing flexible switching between full-step and multiple microstepping modes: 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, 1/128 and 1/256. 1/256 microstepping significantly reduces motor vibration and operating noise, improves positioning accuracy, and meets the demands of precision motion control.
2. Smart Tune intelligent damping technology: Featuring two built-in modes—Smart Tune and Hybrid Damping—the chip automatically optimises current regulation in real time to compensate for motor ageing and parameter variations, suppress motor jitter, reduce audible noise, and minimise the developer’s debugging workload. Combined with a spread-spectrum clock design, it effectively reduces EMI (electromagnetic interference).
3. Integrated current sensing streamlines the BOM: Utilising a built-in current mirror sensing solution, it eliminates the need for external power sampling resistors, reduces the number of components, minimises PCB footprint, and lowers material costs and power consumption. The chip features a built-in 5V LDO regulated output to power external logic circuits.
4. Comprehensive protection mechanisms: Integrated under-voltage lock-out (UVLO), over-current protection (OCP), short-circuit protection and over-temperature shutdown (OSTS) functions; fault conditions can be signalled via the EN/nFAULT pin. Supports a low-power sleep mode with a sleep current of just 2 μA, effectively conserving power during device standby. Operating temperature range: –40 °C to +125 °C, suitable for harsh industrial environments.

Thanks to its high integration, low noise and precision microstepping capabilities, the DRV8428 is suitable for a wide range of applications, including:
Office automation: printers, scanners, photocopiers, banknote counters
Factory/home automation: small actuators, sewing machines, robotic vacuum cleaners, valve control
Security and surveillance: PTZ cameras, dome cameras, pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) systems
Robotics: desktop robots, vacuum robot stepper axes, lightweight joint prototyping
Medical equipment: portable medical devices, infusion pumps, small-scale fluid control

Mingjiada Electronics consistently supplies the TI (Texas Instruments) DRV8428 bipolar stepper motor driver. This device supports a supply voltage range of 4.5V to 35V, an output current of 1A, and 1/256 microstepping. It integrates current sensing and intelligent tuning technology, making it suitable for precision motion control applications such as printers, robots, automation equipment and medical instruments.
