I. All types of Skyworks RF switches (SPDT/SPST/SP3T/SP4T)
1. SPST RF Switches (Single Pole Single Throw)
The SPST RF switch is the simplest type of RF switch in terms of structure. Its core function is to control the ‘on’ and ‘off’ states of a single RF signal path. It has only one input port (Pole) and one output port (Throw), acting as a single-circuit RF switch. It lacks signal switching selection capabilities and is solely responsible for turning the signal on or off.
Skyworks SPST RF switches utilise advanced silicon-based PIN diode technology, offering high power handling capability, a wide frequency coverage range and excellent linear performance, capable of meeting diverse application requirements from low to high frequencies. Key features include: a frequency range spanning 20 MHz to 6 GHz, insertion loss as low as 0.1 dB, and isolation of up to 50 dB, effectively minimising signal leakage; certain high-power models can withstand RF input power ranging from 40 to 150W and support positive power control, making them suitable for demanding industrial and military environments; utilising RoHS-compliant QFN green packaging, they are compact in size, facilitating high-density PCB layout, whilst their operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C ensures stable operation in extreme environments.
Typical applications are primarily found in equipment requiring simple signal on/off control, such as: transmit/receive switching in LTE base stations, signal control in land mobile radios and public safety radios, fail-safe switching in military communication systems, and signal link control in industrial test equipment. Thanks to their outstanding power handling capabilities, Skyworks’ high-power SPST series switches have become the preferred choice in infrastructure and military communications.
2. SPDT RF Switches (Single Pole Double Throw)
SPDT RF switches are the most widely used type of RF switch. Their core function is to switch a single RF signal path between two different output paths. They feature one common input port (Pole) and two output ports (Throw). Based on a control signal, the input signal is selectively routed to one of the output ports whilst simultaneously blocking the signal at the other port, thereby enabling bidirectional signal switching.
Skyworks’ SPDT RF switches cover a full range of low-power, medium-power and high-power products to suit different application requirements. Their core advantages lie in the balance between low insertion loss, high isolation and fast switching speed. For example, the SKY13374-397LF model covers a frequency range of 300 kHz to 6 GHz, with an insertion loss of just 0.8 dB and isolation of up to 22 dB. It utilises a 12-UFQFN package and is suitable for wireless communication applications such as 802.11a/b/g/n; The SKY5A2108 model, meanwhile, focuses on broadband applications from 2.4 to 8.3 GHz, with a typical insertion loss of just 0.6 dB at 5.9 GHz and isolation of 23 dB. It utilises a compact 6-pin MLPD package and is suitable for high-speed wireless applications such as Wi-Fi 6E and UWB; The high-power SKY12255-708LF model supports frequencies from 300 MHz to 3.8 GHz and features fail-safe functionality, making it suitable for base stations and high-power communication equipment.
Furthermore, Skyworks SPDT switches all support CMOS/TTL-compatible control voltages, facilitating integration with various host control chips. Some models do not require external DC blocking capacitors, simplifying circuit design. Their applications span antenna switching in mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, transmit/receive switching in Wi-Fi routers and wireless repeaters, as well as RF signal routing in aerospace and medical equipment, making them indispensable core components in RF front-end modules.
3. SP3T RF Switches (Single Pole Triple Throw)
SP3T RF switches represent a further evolution from SPDT switches, featuring one common input port (Pole) and three output ports (Throw). They enable the selective switching of a single RF signal path between three different output paths, making them suitable for complex RF systems requiring multi-path signal routing. This effectively reduces the number of components and simplifies circuit layout.
Skyworks SP3T RF switches are characterised by their wide bandwidth, low loss and high integration. The representative model, SKY13582-676LF, covers a frequency range of 0.4 to 3.8 GHz and features extremely low insertion loss, with isolation reaching 25 dB at 2.7 GHz. It integrates a GPIO interface, requires no external DC blocking capacitor, and is housed in a 9-pin QFN package (1.1 × 1.1 × 0.5 mm). Compact and RoHS-compliant, it operates within a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C and is suitable for applications such as 3G/4G LTE systems, cellular communication equipment, and front-end/back-end switching for power amplifiers. The SKY13408-465LF model covers the 1–6 GHz frequency range, with a typical IIP3 of 54 dBm and excellent linear performance. It is housed in a 12-pin QFN package and is suitable for high-demand wireless communication and test equipment.
This series of switches achieves path switching via two CMOS/TTL-compatible control voltage inputs. The common port and the selected port exhibit low-loss conduction, whilst maintaining high isolation from the unselected port, effectively preventing signal interference. Its primary applications include multi-band mobile phones, multi-protocol IoT devices, RF test instruments, and industrial communication modules requiring multi-path signal switching. It is particularly suitable for devices requiring the integration of multiple wireless protocols, thereby enhancing system integration.
4. SP4T RF Switch (Single Pole Four Throw)
The SP4T RF switch is the most versatile path-switching option among the four products. Featuring one common input port (Pole) and four output ports (Throw), it enables flexible switching of a single RF signal path between four distinct output paths. This meets the demands of more complex multi-band, multi-protocol RF systems and significantly simplifies circuit design for multi-path signal routing.
Skyworks SP4T RF switches are manufactured using high-performance silicon-based processes, combining the advantages of wide bandwidth, low insertion loss, high isolation and fast switching speeds. The representative model SKY13448-001 covers frequencies from the low-band to the 6GHz high-band, with extremely low insertion loss, excellent isolation and fast switching speeds. It supports a wide control voltage range of 1.2V to 5.0V, facilitating connection to host chips such as application processors and FPGAs. This model utilises a 10-pin TDFN package, offering a compact design that saves PCB space. It features robust ESD protection and operates within a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C, making it suitable for industrial environments. It is compatible with various wireless protocols including LTE, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth, Zigbee and other wireless protocols.
The symmetrical port design of the Skyworks SP4T switch provides flexibility for signal routing, accommodating transmit/receive switching requirements in high-speed communication scenarios such as receive diversity and TD-SCDMA/TDD-LTE. It serves as a core component in multi-band mobile terminals, wireless base stations, IoT gateways and high-end RF test equipment. Together with SP3T and SPDT switches, it forms the Skyworks multi-pole RF switch family, allowing flexible selection based on the number of paths required by the system to achieve an optimal balance between system performance and cost.
